Motherling said I began reading at two, and that by four I was writing short sentences. What I recall is sneaking printer paper from Poppy's home office, folding the sheets lengthwise, and then twice according to width. I remember opening the pages and cutting them along the folds. Each 8.5 x11-inch sheet became eight small pages that I stacked and trimmed into something resembling a notebook. Binding was fashioned from of Scotch tape, staples, or needled thread. By seven, my Christmas wishes were granted: a tiny-and-shiny, patent-leather diary that game with a glimmering silver lock and key.
Writing instruments and journals or notebooks appear prominently in my earliest memories. My MFA thesis manuscript was a novel called The Skin Map in which two women--a journalist and her subject--defy the animosity between them for a bigger cause.
COURT QUEENS: A History of the WNBA and the Power of Persevering Women is under contract with ABRAMS Press. (A release date is forthcoming.)
